What's the in game date? The game is set in present day, 2011, meaning today's date is also the in-game date. With this decision, characters are encouraged to post about modern day events. News headlines and pop culture fads are great tools!
If the game is present day, why are the characters ten years younger than canon? In order to set the game present day, characters were aged down by a decade. Harry Potter and his classmates were born in 1989-1990. Other generations (such as the Marauders) would follow the same example.
Really, no magic at all? At all. Hogwarts is simply a prestigious boarding school, who selects a certain number of students each year to study in the castle. These students receive one of the best educations in the UK, and are guaranteed admission at Somerset University upon graduation. For more information on Hogwarts and Somerset University, click here.
What about other changes to canon? With no magic certain things will be different, right? Precisely. In this universe, Harry's parents, and everyone else, are alive and well. Tom Riddle is the Mayor of Godric's Hollow, and he's got some skeletons in his closet, but his aspirations are largely political versus psychotic. Other minor adjustments have been made regarding canon events such as the Triwizard Tournament, Dumbledore's Army, and other important events. That information can be located here.
Would my character still have been sorted at Hogwarts? Yes. Hogwarts students are interviewed by a panel of professors and placed into their houses. Characters must remain with their canon house.
Can my character not live in Godric's Hollow? Your character is not required to live in Godric's Hollow. The town is located in Somerset, in the West Country of England, and a 90 minute commute to Bristol. London is roughly 3 hours away by car. Cornwall, Devon, and the coast are both fairly short commutes from the town as well.
Can I change canon attributes to my character? No. Though an alternate universe, all characters are expected to remain as close to canon as possible.
Is the game epilogue compliant? No. Characters are free to date/marry whomever they wish.
How do the journals work? The journals work the same as Insanejournal or Livejournal. For the purposes of this game, journals are installed on a network for Hogwarts alumni and friends (such as Fleur Delacour or Viktor Krum) to update others about their lives. Each journal is linked to the others, although characters can filter entries and comments to one another (just as you might use a custom filter here on IJ). Likewise, there are no icons on the journal network although players are encouraged to use icons as they would in any other game.
Can I play a next-gen/original character? Unfortunately, no. We will not be accepting any next gen characters. Original characters will only be accepted as siblings/additional children of older characters. These characters will be determined on a case by case basis. No stand-alone original characters will be accepted.
Can my character have non-canon children? Within reason. Non-canon children must be discussed with the mods and agreed upon by all characters affected (Example: Draco getting a younger sister would require agreement from Narcissa, Lucius, and Draco).
Where can I find social media coding? Coding for social media is located here, in the thehollowsocial community. The post is forward-dated so that it will always be the first entry in the community. However, you can also locate the codes via the tag social media: coding.
Will my characters be required to have a social media account? No, your characters do not need a social media account. How many or how few a character has can be determined by the player.
How do social media accounts work? Do I need to create a facebook/twitter/tumblr to be in the game? Coding for social media is available in the thehollowrpg. These codes include twitter, Facebook, tumblr, and text messaging. You should NOT create a profile or account on any social media channels. Everything is done on IJ and through the use of HTML coding.
Do the Harry Potter books exist in this game? No. The books and movies do not exist.
Can I suggest ideas for shops/housing/etc for the game? Of course! We welcome any suggestions for the game. Suggestions can be made through the Suggestion Box, which is located here for current thehollowrpg members.
I have seen similar games around IJ, what gives? Your mods from thehollowrpg were members of the now-closed muggle_rpg, with permission from the mods of that game we have tweaked the premise and changed the location for this game so that we, and others, could continue writing with this premise. Our game has no affiliation with londoncalling, the other Muggle based game, although we do wish them the best!
